A Great Trumpet for Great Films

Born in Turin, Rosso's parents had attempted to send him to university, but at 19 he chose the trumpet over academia, and left home. After his employment in a nightclub was terminated by the police, he returned home, but soon after departed again to relaunch his career. He soon became one of the best-known jazz trumpeters in Italy, reaching the crest of his popularity in the 1960s. He became known in the UK in 1962 when his recording of "Concerto Disperato" was covered by Ken Thorne and his Orchestra and became a hit under the title "The Theme from 'The Legion's Last Patrol'". Rosso's original was quickly released on the little-known Durium label and also made the charts, but was less successful than the cover. His 1965 worldwide hit "Il Silenzio" went to #1 in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and sold over five million copies by the end of 1967. It was awarded a gold disc. He also acted in the 1960s. Rosso died of a tumor in 1994, at the age of 68.

A magnificent sampler with all the great hits (...and more) from Hugo Winterhalter and his Orchestra.

Hugo was an easy listening arranger and composer, Winterhalter was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Mount St. Mary's near Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1931, where he played saxophone for the orchestra and sang in two of the choirs. He later studied violin and reed instruments at the New England Conservatory of Music. After graduating, he taught school for several years before turning professional during the mid 1930s, serving as a sideman and arranger for Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Raymond Scott, Claude Thornhill and others.

In 1950, Winterhalter signed on with RCA Victor, where he arranged sessions for artists including Perry Como, Eddie Fisher and the Ames Brothers; he also recorded several instrumental albums, among them 1952'sGreat Music Themes of Television, one of the first collections of TV theme songs ever recorded. Winterhalter also notched a series of chart hits, including "Blue Tango," "Vanessa," "The Little Shoemaker" and "Song of The Barefoot Contessa"; with pianist Eddie Heywood, he reached the number two spot with 1956's "Canadian Sunset."

He remained with RCA until 1963, at which time he moved to Kapp; that same year, he also penned the main title theme for the film, Diamond Head. At Kapp he recorded a handful of albums including The Best of '64and its follow-up, The Big Hits of 1965, before leaving the label to work on Broadway. He later worked in television as well, and continued recording the occasional LP for various budget labels.

Winterhalter died from cancer, in Greenwich, Connecticut on 17 September 1973.

The last few days we have posted albums with the music of Robert Stolz played by Günter Noris, James Last amd Hugo Strasser. Now it's time to let Stolz himself show how he composed, arranged and played his music with his grand orchestra. Austrian Robert Stolz (1880-1975) composed numerous melodies, most of them for operettas. A lot of his songs have become Schlagers (German evergreens) and are still often played and sung in different languages like for instance the first ever made continental foxtrot Salome also known as Romeo by Petula Clark.
